Culture as a question of organization

Leuphana Innovation Community Arts and Culture

The Leuphana Innovation Community Art and Culture examines, reflects and changes the forms and processes of artistic and cultural organization on several levels. Together with local art spaces and international art museums, the project works on mapping the current developments of social, political, ecological and technological transformation for the art and culture sector and discussing, developing and implementing organizational responses and ways of dealing with them.

The Goal

The project understands the present and future of art and culture as an organizational issue. The aim is to develop and reflect on forms and processes of organization in close cooperation with the project partners in order to preserve and further develop the richness and relevance of the field of art and cultural production. To this end, the work of the Innovation Community Art and Culture focuses on two organizational levels and their connections. Spaces of Art Organization is dedicated to local, self-organized art and cultural spaces as laboratories for social change. Expanding Art Museums comprises a network of internationally renowned art museums that deal with organizational and digital transformation.

The Challenge

Local art spaces usually work on a project or program basis and are heavily dependent on external funding. This structure enables flexible, innovative and civically effective working methods. At the same time, however, it is structurally unstable and insecure. What organizational methods and practices emerge in this field of tension? As formal organizations, art museums are confronted with various processes of change that revolve around issues of participation and inclusion, digital change and sustainability, as well as political areas of conflict. How can the negotiation and exhibition of these topics on the “front stages” of museums be reconciled and shaped with the organizational forms and processes of their “back stages”?

Our Path: develope knowledge and handling methods together

All project activities are based on close cooperative relationships in the local and international research and practice communities. These communities are characterized by the close interweaving of cultural and organizational theoretical research and teaching with the practice-oriented experience, knowledge and reflexivity of artists, curators, cultural managers and cultural organizers. The collaboration is characterized by joint workshops, learning labs, focus groups, case studies and conferences as well as media formats, exhibitions and performances.
